Why college? What is the purpose of education?

• The purpose of education is to teach students to think critically so they can make considered decisions that affect their lives. Data is essential to decision making, and colleges are organized to supply data, and to present students with an opportunity to make judgments about data presented. The task of the university is to provide a safe environment for thinking-deciding people!

What about going to college to get a better job?

• College graduates do get better jobs, because going to college is about getting educated, and getting educated is about learning to think critically in decision making. A college education sharpens one's ability to think, and thinking is a part of every job. Employers are fairly certain that students who have completed degree programs are "capable" individuals who can respond to the variety of challenges that are presented on the job.

Degree completion includes course work in a major

• Majors indicate interests. Most colleges provide assistance in selecting a major in the form of interest inventories that compare your interests with interests of individuals in a variety of occupations. From these interests, a major interest can be selected. There is no best major, since majors motivate students to complete a degree. Select a major that interest you, a major that will encourage you to degree completion.
