The Monta Vista F/S football team went into the 2006 season with high expectations from the coaching staff and players. Those expectations were met and exceeded with a dominating, undefeated 9-0-1 season! The previous 3 seasons of JV football yeilded 4 wins combined, with 2 of those wins coming at the very end of the 2005 season. This group of Sophomores have an unbeaten streak of 12 games and counting. Each team we played this year felt the pressure of a strangling defense, the best offense in the league, and some of the toughest individuals to ever wear a Monta Vista uniform. The team had 17 1st team all-league players, The MVP of the league, the most valuable offensive player of the league, and the special teams player of the year. The offense used a no-huddle attack and the defense swarmed opponents and dominated the line of scrimmage. The 2006 season will go down in history as one of the best in Monta Vista football's storied history, and it offers us a sneak peak of what is to come in the next few years at the varsity level.

The Monta Vista JV boys basketball team had an exciting run during the 2006-2007 season. The team finished with an 11-11 overall record and a 7-5 league record. This was a pleasant turnaround for a JV team that finished 2-10 in league the previous year. First year coach Michael Hicks inherited a team that was willing to work hard and play together. The team was led by sophomores Ryan Satterlee, Phaniteja Kanneganti, and Alex Mendoza. Satterlee was the floor captain for the Matadors and was voted "Most Inspirational" by his teammates. Kanneganti was a first team all league (SCVAL) selection, leading the team in scoring and steals. He was voted MVP of the team by his teammates. Mendoza played a big role as a post player. He led the team in rebounds and was second on the team in scoring average while landing himself a spot on the SCVAL second team. Shan Hansra played a key role as a freshman, finishing in the top five in nearly all statistical categories and was rewarded by being selected as a SCVAL honorable mention. Other team awards were given to Rishiv Ranjan (Most Improved), Evan Chen (Most Improved), Junda Liu (Hustle Award), and Chris Garvin (Coach's Award). Every member of the 2006-2007 team contributed to a successful season and next year's team has plans to pick up right where this year's left off.
What a season for the Monta Vista boy's Varsity basketball team. After a new
start with a new coach, Matt Tait, the Matadors stunned the league by winning
their first league championship in many years. The Matadors ended the season
with a 19-10 record. The league record was an amazing 11-1, running off 10 games
in a row after splitting their first 2 games. The Matadors ended up with a 7th
seed in the Division 1 CCS tourney. They hosted a home CCS game against the
Alvarez Eagles where they won a high scoring game 86-79. In the end they fell
to the number two seed the Piedmont Hill Pirates in the quarterfinals. Marcus
Woo was named co-MVP of the El Camino division. Eric Lee was first league all
team and senior of the year for the El Camino Division. Others receiving awards
were Sean Brar, 2nd league all team and Junior of the year and Kevin Lang who
was on 2nd league all team.
Girls Basketball

JV Coach: Gary Price

The Monta Vista girls basketball team had a tremendous run this season ending both 500 in league and 500 in the overall season as well. We played very difficult pre-season and held our own against Menlo School and Valley Christian, both formidable opponents. It was through these two games that we truly came together as a team and saw the potential that our year had to offer. Our biggest win was on Senior Night vs. Homestead, the #1 team in our league. The team was led this year by Sophia Tam who was not only voted MVP by her teammates, but League MVP as well. The success of the year was also attributed to the strong support of the entire team and the cohesiveness and chemistry of the 7 veteran seniors that have played together for many years. Sabina Lau and Kelly Bodwin were both awarded all league honors as well. Lau was our go to 3-point shooter and her hustle and determination on the court was inspiring to all and her contributions led us to many victories. Lau was also awarded "Most Hustle" by her teammates for her relentless desire to out play her opponents and her commitment to the entire team. Kelly Bodwin averaged double figures in almost every game, was a leading rebounder and was awarded "Offensive Player of the Year". It was because of her scoring and defense that team achieved the success that it did. Scarlett Su was a tremendous force in the post both offensively and defensively, she pulled down an average of 10 rebounds a game and helped a great deal with her defensive leadership, shutting down the opponents best post player and it is because of this that she was the obvious choice for "Defensive Player of the Year". "Most Improved" honors were awarded to Sheleana Varvaro and Helena Montin for their constant determination in improving themselves as players and their commitment to the success of the entire team. We also had four Rookies this year joining the varsity team and each player helped a great deal in reaching our goal to go to CCS. Amanda Hui was awarded "Rookie of the Year" and showed great improvement in all aspects of the game and will be a force to reckon with next year. Nisha Kashyap was awarded the "Coaches Award" for her constant dedication to the team and her genuine concern for the success of each of her teammates. She not only maintained of balance of integrity and pride but also influenced the players around her to build on their strengths and grow as a team. With a great JV team transitioning to Varsity next year, we hope to achieve the same caliber of basketball next year and many years to come.

Perseverance and dedication were the words of wisdom for the Boys Varsity Soccer Team. In early December the team's head coach stepped down. With new coaches in place, the team had to come together and learn a new system. They worked hard during practices and saw more competitive games as the season went on. The team finished third in League with some impressive wins. During preseason the team beat eventual CCS Champion Gilroy 1-0. The last half of the season the team came on strong and finished 3-1-2. The team finished 5-3-4 in League and 7-8-6 overall. All-League selections included Darryl Tom and Hiroki Udagawa to first team and Om Marwah, and Hamish Ferguson on second team. Drew Constant also received the Sophomore of the Year award for the League. They had a strong supporting cast from Matt Marshall, Max Feit, Jeff Boman and Christian Chu. Look for more success from the team next year.
Boys JV Soccer
The team was third in the El Camino division with a 7-4-1 league record. One of the biggest highlights of the season is that the returning players from the previous year improved tremendously. Because the varsity squad was so large, the returning JV players were not the strongest players last year, but they were the main component of this year's squad. Two of those players received all-league awards: MVP goalkeeper was Matt Irvin and Co-Defender of the year was Tamer Ashkar. The team got along, organized several dinners/activities, and worked well together on and off the field. First team all league players were: Max Ratkovich, Curtis Upton, and Omid Shamsoddini; second team all league players were: Michael McGarry and Nadav Caspi. The Coach's Awards went to: Erik Wendeschleg and Omid Shamsoddini

Varsity Baseball
Although it has been a tough season, the future is bright. The varsity baseball team has five sophomores in the starting line up, led by Justin Rahn, Chad Estes, Jason Kearns, Nick Tong and Chris Cantwell. Also, our starting pitchers were Justin Rahn and Chad Estes as Sophomores. We have also have had strong contribution from Billy Guardino, Junior, Matt Wilson, Junior, Dustin Brown, Junior and Shawn Voigt, Senior. Justin Rahn and Chad Estes were selected 2nd Team All-League. Billy Guardino and Jason Kearns were selected Honorable Mention All-League. Justin Rahn was selected team MVP, Shawn Voigt was selected team Most Inspirational, and Chad Estes won the team highest batting average.
The F/S Baseball started the year with a bang. Through the first half of the
season, the team had a 10-2 record. Chris Cantwell was moved up to the Varsity
during Spring Break, where he contributed right away. The team also suffered
injuries to some key players and finished the season in third place and an overall
record of 13-9. Kevin Wilson was recognized with a First Team All-League selection,
along with second team honors to Dave Orvick, Jarrod Beiser and Chris Cantwell.
Josh Cornwell, Kalon Zandbergs, Anthony Maldonado, and Nick Utley were key contributors
to the team's success.

Record was 6-6, placing 3rd in the division. Three juniors were the backbone
of the team- Thomas Kula, Vishnal Sridhar, and Kevin Lee. These players were
dedicated showed true team spirit. The team looks strong in the future, as many
are returning for their senior year.
Boys JV Tennis
The team was third in the De Anza division with an 8-4 league record. There
were only two returning players this year so there was no spot on the roster
that seemed to be a "guaranteed" win. Every player had to step up
and win his match at some point in order to get the team win. There were several
4-3 wins that were dependent upon the last court's outcome. It was a challenging
season with little court space, a large squad, minimal practice time, and inexperience,
but when the team needed each other, they pulled through. The team awards were:
MVP James Hansen, Most Improved Jonas Chang, Most Inspirational Nate Park, and
Coach's Awards to Kyle Ju and Albert Lin.

The Varsity Boys finished 3rd league. The team was lead by Bret Gilbert and Darryl Tom.
JV Boys Volleyball
Even though they were the first team MV has had, The JV team rose to the challenge of establishing a strong tradition of excellence for the teams that will follow this inaugural season. They drew on every player's contributing strengths of athleticism, leadership, experience, skills, hard work, enthusiasm, and integrity to congeal quickly as a strong team and solidify a third place ranking in our competitive league of eight teams. Yes, third place in their first year! The only two schools they lost to are powerhouses Homestead and Los Gatos. But the most commendable achievements cannot be found in statistics and win-loss records. With strong peer leadership and team-centric attitudes, the Monta Vista JV volleyball team has been firmly established as a team that supports all players, works hard, and has lots of fun doing it. They also received generous coaching help from a team mother, who is a setter herself, and a recent graduate of Homestead volleyball. Thanks to all the family, friends, and fans. It was a great experience

We had an outstanding season, finishing 10-2. Our two losses were no surprise - one each to Los Gatos and Saratoga, the perennial powerhouses of the league. What was a surprise was that also beat each of them, for the first time in many years. At the league finals tournament, we came in a disappointing fourth place behind the unbeaten Mountain View, Los Gatos, and an upstart Palo Alto team. Strong showings from senior Phil Lee and junior/newcomer Mike Shwe earned them spots in CCS Regionals. Other strong players include sophomore Jiin Park, who also competed in the Girls CCS in the fall, and freshman Shen Fuchigama.
