This tutorial explains how to graph various types of functions TI-89
.

Graphing a Function

To graph a function:
Press [ MODE ]
Set graph mode to FUNCTION

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F1 ]

You should see the following screen

Press [ ENTER ] to enter a function
into y1

Enter the function

Example:
Graph the function f(x) = sin(x)

[ 2nd ] [ SIN ] [ X ] [ ) ] [ ENTER ]

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F3 ]
You should see the following screen

top of page

Graphing a Parametric Function

To graph a parametric function
Press [ MODE ]
Set graph mode to PARAMETRIC

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F1 ]

You should see the following screen

Enter in x(t) and y(t)

Example:

For the parametric function:
x(t) = t + 2
y(t) = t + 4

[ t ] [ + ] [ 2 ] [ ENTER ]
[ t ] [ + ] [ 4 ] [ ENTER ]

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F3 ]
You should see the following screen

top of page

Graphing a Polar Function

To graph a polar function
Press [ MODE ]
Set graph mode to POLAR

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F1 ]

You should see the following screen

Enter in the polar function

Example:

To graph the function r(x) = 4sin(6x)

[ 4 ] [ 2nd ] [ Y / SIN ] [ 6 ]
[ green diamond ] [ ^ ] [ ) ] [ ENTER ]

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F3 ]
You should see the following screen

Graphing a 3D Function

To graph a 3D function
Press [ MODE ]
Set graph mode to 3D

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F1 ]

You should see the following screen

Enter in the 3D function

Example:

For the function z1(x) = xy(x^2-y^2) / (x^2 + y^2)

[ X ] [ * ] [ Y ] [ * ] [ ( ] [ X ]
[ ^ ] [ 2 ] [ - ] [ Y ] [ ^ ] [ 2 ]
[ ) ] [ / ] [ ) ] [ X ] [ ^ ] [ 2 ]
[ + ] [ Y ] [ ^ ] [ 2 ] [ ) ]
[ ENTER ]

  Press [ F1 ]
Select the ninth option

Set the options to:
Coordinates = RECT
Axes = AXES
Labels = ON
Style = WIRE FRAME

Press [ ENTER ]

  Press [ green diamond ]

To graph the slope field for
y’(x) = x^2

[ t ] [ ^ ] [ 2 ] [ ENTER ]

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F3 ]

You should see the following screen

To graph the function at a given point:

Example:

For the same function as above
Enter yi1 = 1
[ 1] [ ENTER ]

Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F3 ]

You should see the following screen

top of page
Graphing a Piecewise Defined Function

To graph a Piecewise Defined Function
Press [ MODE ]
Set graph mode to FUNCTION

  Press [ green diamond ]
Press [ F1 ]

You should see the following screen

Enter the first function
Press [ | ]
Enter the bounds
Repeat for other parts

Example:

y1 = [ X ] [ | ] [X]
[ green diamond ] [ 0 ] [ 0 ] [ENTER ]

y2 = [ X ] [ ^ ] [ 2 ] [ | ] [ X ] [ green diamond ] [ . ] [ 0 ]
[ ENTER ]
